Home electrical wiring plan: prepare circuits, controls and connections

A home electrical wiring plan clarifies how equipment is connected and controlled. It complements the electrical plan by surfacing the connections you actually need for circuits, lighting, controls and low-voltage networks.

The role of the wiring plan in a home project

A wiring plan prepares the installation logic before the build. It helps you understand which controls drive which lights, where the dedicated circuits run and how to organise equipment room by room.

It does not replace electrical sizing, but it makes the need clearer when working with an electrician.

The circuits to anticipate

In a home you should distinguish lighting circuits, power circuits, dedicated circuits for the cooktop, oven, water heater and air conditioning, ventilation and communication networks.

AS/NZS 3000 sets the safety rules; the provision per room is a design decision. Table C9 of the standard (informative) gives the common loading method — about 20 power points on a 20 A circuit, about 20 lighting points on a 10 A circuit. Your plan should make both easy to check, even though the final validation remains technical.

  • Lighting and switches.
  • Power points per room.
  • Cooktop, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, water heater.
  • Data, TV, smart home and security.

Keep the wiring readable

Too many lines on a plan can make it unreadable. Better to draw only the important connections, use distinct colours or notes, and ship a clear legend.

Planelico lets you wire the useful elements together and keeps an exportable plan without excessive graphic clutter.

Quick method with Planelico

  1. 1

    List the equipment

Identify power points, lights, switches, data points and dedicated circuits room by room.

  2. 2

    Place the symbols

Position each element on the PDF plan.

  3. 3

    Create zones

Split the home into rooms to structure the reading.

  4. 4

    Draw the connections

Link controls to lights and any elements that must be explicitly paired.

  5. 5

    Export a readable document

Add the legend and summary so you can hand off a clear plan.

Frequently asked questions

Difference between an electrical plan and a wiring plan?
The electrical plan locates equipment. The wiring plan emphasises the connections and controls between that equipment.
Do I have to draw every cable on the plan?
Not necessarily. To stay readable, it is often better to draw the connections that help understanding and add notes for technical details.
Is a wiring plan useful for a quote?
Yes. It removes ambiguities and helps the electrician understand quantities, locations and functional expectations.
