The 4 types of electrical diagrams
Single-line diagram
Simplified representation where each circuit is shown as a single line. Used for the switchboard overview and as the basis of the circuit schedule.
Shows the physical cable routing between equipment. Essential for smart home systems and complex circuits.

FAQ — Home electrical wiring diagram
What is the difference between an electrical plan and a wiring diagram?
An electrical floor plan shows where each electrical component is physically located on the floor plan (top-down view). A wiring diagram shows how components are logically connected and how the wiring runs between them. For most homeowners and electricians, a floor plan with circuit grouping is enough to get a job quoted.
Do I need a wiring diagram for a home renovation?
For partial renovations, an electrical floor plan with symbol placement is generally enough for your electrician. For a full rewire or a new build, a single-line diagram of the switchboard is what lets everyone agree on the circuit split — and on the RCD arrangement, with no more than three circuits per RCD — before rough-in. The completed work is then certified by the electrician under your state’s rules.
What software is used to create electrical wiring diagrams?
Professional electrical designers use dedicated CAD and design software, which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars a year. For homeowners and most electricians, Planelico is a free browser-based alternative that handles the electrical floor plan layer and proposes the switchboard — without the steep learning curve.
Can I create an electrical wiring diagram without CAD?
Yes. Planelico lets you create a complete electrical floor plan with symbol placement, wiring connections between switches and lights, coloured room zones and professional PDF export — all in a browser, for free. Detailed single-line diagrams and the certified circuit schedule are normally finalised by the electrician.
How do I show a two-way switch on a wiring diagram?
Place two switch symbols at the two control locations and one light symbol where the fitting goes, then draw a connection line from each switch to the light. The convention is to label both switches with the same circuit number (e.g. "L1") so it is clear they control the same fitting. Planelico’s wiring tool handles this in a few clicks.
How long does it take to draw a complete home wiring diagram?
For a typical 150 m² home with around 120 electrical points (power points, switches, lights, data), expect 30 to 60 minutes once your floor plan PDF is imported. The fastest path is to work room by room: place all symbols first, then draw the switch-to-light connections, then the room zones. Planelico’s auto-generated legend means you never have to type the list yourself.
Can I export the wiring diagram to PDF for my electrician?
Yes — Planelico exports a multi-page PDF including your annotated floor plan, an auto-generated legend listing every symbol used with category and count, and an optional summary table by room. The export is print-ready and uses the original PDF as background so dimensions stay accurate.
